Wizards of the Coast is expanding its Magic: The Gathering universe with a new expansion centered around Marvel's Super Heroes and villains, set to launch on June 26. This crossover aims to blend iconic Marvel characters with Magic's established gameplay, featuring over 600 mechanically unique cards across various product lines including Commander decks and Jumpstart offerings.

New Mechanics and Returning Favorites

The expansion introduces several new gameplay mechanics designed to fit the Marvel theme. Power-Up enhances creatures with activated abilities, offering benefits like +1/+1 counters and the potential to affect other creatures, with a cost reduction if activated on the same turn the creature is cast. Teamwork allows players to tap creatures to meet an additional casting cost for spells, with the option to tap creatures with a combined power of X or more for 'Teamwork X' spells. Plans are a new enchantment subtype primarily associated with villains, accumulating counters through specific actions before being sacrificed for a reward.

Creature types Hero and Villain will be prominent. Returning mechanics include Connive, which was previously seen in the Streets of New Capenna and the Spider-Man set, and Improvise, which lets players tap artifacts to reduce spell costs. Sagas will also return to represent iconic Marvel stories.

Thematic Integration and Collectibility

Mechanics like Worthy are tied directly to Marvel lore, specifically referencing Mjolnir's requirement that only non-villainous legendary creatures can wield it. Double-faced cards will represent transformations, such as Bruce Banner becoming the Hulk, and will incorporate mechanics like Enrage. The set will also feature special card treatments, including Borderless Logo Treatment and Borderless Classic Comic Cards that utilize original comic artwork.

This initiative follows previous crossovers, such as the Star Trek set featuring Captain Kirk and a previous Spider-Man tie-in. The integration of such a large franchise highlights Wizards of the Coast's strategy for expanding Magic's reach.
