Max Huang, who plays Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat II, is interested in a spin-off film focused on the characters of Kung Lao and Liu Kang, similar to Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Huang prepared extensively for the role, including training with a Shaolin monk.

Mortal Kombat II is set to be released in theaters on May 8. Producer Todd Garner has addressed the film's mixed reviews, particularly those criticizing elements of the Mortal Kombat franchise. The film currently has a 73% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
